When converting images into SVG files, the choice of software depends on your project needs. DrawingBot is a paid program that can handle complex images, support multi-color conversions, and separate colors into layers. Inkscape is a free alternative suitable for simpler projects or when basic SVG output is sufficient. Choose the software that best matches your requirements for image complexity and desired SVG quality.
If you’re working with pen plotters or CNC drawing machines, converting bitmap images (like PNG or JPG) into clean SVG vector files is essential. DrawingBot is a powerful tool that helps you transform photos into plotter-ready line art. Follow this step-by-step guide — each step preserved clearly so you can insert tutorial images.
Step 1: Open DrawingBot and Import Your PNG/JPG Image
Open the DrawingBot software.
Please note: DrawingBot is a paid program, so you'll need an active license to use it.
Once the software is open, import your bitmap image — such as PNG, JPG, or any supported raster format.
This will be the source file you convert into a vector drawing.

Step 2: Select Only One Pen in the Pen Setting Panel
Go to the Pen Setting section.
For this tutorial, check only one pen.
Using a single pen ensures clean, consistent line art and avoids overlapping styles when generating the SVG output.

Step 3: Choose a Style in Path Finding Controls
In the Path Finding Controls panel, you can choose from multiple artistic effects to transform your image. DrawingBot includes several popular styles such as:
- Lines
- Bezier Curves
- Fluid Effect
- Magnetic Field
- Bubbles
- …and more
Select the effect that best matches the style you want.
Here, you can also adjust parameters like line length, density, and various style-specific settings to refine your final artwork.
These customization options allow you to convert the image into a unique line-based composition perfect for pen plotters.

Step 4: Start the Conversion and Export as SVG
Click Start to begin converting your bitmap into vector paths.
DrawingBot will process the image and generate line art based on the settings you selected.
When the conversion is complete:
Navigate to
File → Export per/Drawing → SVG
This exports your artwork as an SVG vector file, making it fully compatible with pen plotters, laser engravers, Inkscape, and other vector-based workflows.
