How to Extend the iDraw H-Version Plotter to 1.5m x 1.0m: A DIY Guide

Learn how to extend your iDraw H-Version (A3/A2/A1/A0) to a larger version (e.g., 1.0m x 1.8m) for more creative possibilities. Please note that modifying the machine in this way will break the manufacturer’s warranty.

Materials Cost: ~150€

Materials Required:

The following materials are for extending the iDraw H-Version to a 1.5 x 1m size. If you wish to extend it further, adjust the lengths accordingly. However, extending too much may lead to rail deflection issues.

Tools Required:

  • Metal Saw (if profiles need cutting)
  • M5 Drill
  • Tools that come with the iDraw (Hex keys, etc.)

Step-by-Step Guide

1. Disassemble the iDraw H X-Axis

  • Unplug all cables.
  • Unscrew the X-Axis.

  • Take off the X-Axis.
  • Loosen the belt guide on the opposite side of the motor.

  • Loosen the carriage plates and slip them off the profile.

  • Slip off the Z-Axis carriage.

  • Unscrew the Y-motor splitter.

2. Assemble the New X-Axis

  • Take the new 2020 profile and screw on the Y-motor splitter.
  • Take the 2m cables and plug them into OUT2.
  • Fix the cable into the profile with cable holders and double-sided tape underneath to keep it flat.

  • Slip on the X-Axis carriage.
  • Put on the carriage plates.
  • Put in the belt guide, ensuring the belt is tightened.
  • Install the timing belt and fix it with binders to the X carriage.

3. Disassemble the H Y-Axis

  • Slip off the Y motors.

4. Assemble the Bigger Y-Axis

  • Take the 2040 profile and slip on one of the motors.
  • Take the timing belt, fix it on one side.
  • Thread it through the motor and fix it on the other side.
  • Ensure the carriage moves smoothly and isn’t idling as this video:

  • Screw on the plates at the end of the axes (M5 thread drill or drill directly into the aluminum).

5. Assemble the Extended iDraw

  • Lay out the Y-axes in parallel and loosely connect the ends with the remaining profiles (adjust as necessary to fit the X-axis).
  • Place the prepared X-axis onto the carriages carefully (move the Y-axis to fit).
  • Screw on the X-axis securely.
  • For squaring, move the X-axis to one side, then fix the Y-axes on that side. Repeat for the other side.

6. Wiring Up the Extended iDraw

  • Thread the Z-axis cable through the shorter drag chain.
  • Thread the X, Y, and Z motor cables through the longer drag chain.
  • Reconnect all the cables properly.
  • Take the L-profile and install it across the X-axis.
